Are you visiting Washington, D.C.? While you and your family can do a lot within the limits of the District of Columbia, you have ample reason to take the kids farther afield to some of the colorful, amusing, and thrilling locations all around the city. Not sure what to do? Here are a few great ideas for any family.
1. Take a Boat at Annapolis
Annapolis, MD, is the destination for anyone who loves being on or around the water. Home to the U.S. Naval Academy, water lovers can bask in not only maritime history but also naval history. Take a boat ride from Kent Narrows, and then top it off with great seafood right at the water's edge.
2. See Wild Horses on Assateague Island
Many kids love to see horses - especially wild horses. The ponies that roam this area are likely descendants of domesticated horses that have since returned to the wild. They are carefully managed by both the National Park Service and Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. While you don't want to get too near either of the two wild herds, you can view them on the protected beaches, in forests, or even swimming.
3. Enjoy the Outdoors in Shenandoah National Park
The stunning Shenandoah National Park in Virginia allows visitors the rare treat of enjoying some of the most scenic drives in the country. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the national park may be most famous for the 105-mile Skyline Drive and the mysterious depths of Luray Caverns. You can also take the kids on ranger-led walks, go horseback riding, get in some fishing, or take the kids kayaking or tubing.
4. Try the Waterfalls at Great Falls
Great Falls National Park is in Virginia, and it's another great way to get the kids outside to enjoy the water. The actual falls are at their best in the spring when the snow pack is melting, but this area is amazing no matter the season. If you don't have a lot of time, take the family out for a gorgeous picnic.
If you can stay longer, consider exploring the other side of the Potomac River in Great Falls, Maryland, to see the rare canal system and its boats.
5. Visit the National Aquarium
Baltimore, Maryland has plenty to engage family members of all ages. But one consistent crowd-pleaser remains the National Aquarium. Boasting around 20,000 different animals, the Aquarium has something for even the pickiest of travelers. Before you arrive, your kids can even entertain themselves by watching the live feeds of sharks, jellies, and tropical fish on the Aquarium's website.
6. Experience History at Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, may not be the most obvious place to take kids, but it has a lot to offer families. Walk in the forest and see a variety of farm animals, including sheep, hogs, and cows. And in the summer, your kids can visit the working animals of the pioneer farm recreation. Look for kid-friendly, hands-on activities to help history come alive while the adults see American history in person.
Which of these area escapes might be the perfect way to start or end your visit to Washington, D.C.? What could provide a needed break from the hustle and bustle of the metro area? No matter where your family's interests lie, this region provides whatever you need to meet them.
